Patrick’s Story; A story of Transformation and starting a fresh

Patrick’s Story; A story of Transformation and starting a fresh

Patrick a 24-year-old, one of the reformed Juvenile youth from Mombasa, has started a vegetable garden in the place which used to be the gang’s hideout in Mombasa County.  In April 2022, Patrick started a vegetable garden as an alternative means of life as he had shifted from the Juvenile gangs.

Recently when IRCK visited, Patrick’s vegetable garden, the garden was not doing as well as it should have, mainly due to prevailing adverse climatic conditions i.e. extreme rains and lack of rain. According to Patrick, “First instance the rain-washed away the vegetables that he had planted. Then the dry season dried up some on the seedlings that he had started to cultivate, as he could not get any support to do irrigation in the area.”

Despite the few setbacks, there are a few crops that managed to withstand the variation of the weather such as some banana, sugarcane, pawpaw and palm trees, which are still healthy. For sustainability, he also intends to move and expand in a better place there he can be able to manage and plant more weather friendly crops.

To make ends meet, he is currently operating a Boda Boda (motorbike transport business). This enables him to get some income and refrain him from backsliding and rejoining the gangs. At this point, he has no plans of going back to school but finding a more sustainable way of supporting himself and his family.
